The power of the unreal: creating a live experience for League of Legends

Introduction

E-sports have boomed in the last decade, with major tournaments taking place around the world, and champions and heroes crowned by ecstatic fans. League of Legends is the flagship product of developer Riot Games.

The Challenge

From virtual to real experience

Riot Games’ partnership with Tengjing Sports has seen League of Legends become something of an obsession among young Chinese audiences, with nearly 40% of all users in the country playing the game.

League of Legends Professional League (LPL) is a tournament that brings together the best players across the country, crowning the winning team before they go on to the world championships. For the 2019 LPL Spring Finals, Uniplan was brought on board to bring this event to life. The Uniplan team were presented with the challenge of translating the virtual experience of the game into an emotional moment for a live audience of 10,000 fans, as well as many more live streaming the event online.

What We Did

Summoning the Summoner

In order to create a bridge between the virtual and live dimensions of the game, we created a massive statue rendition of the Summoner. An avatar familiar to LPL fans, it represents each player during their experience of the game. This was brought to life with light effects and mechanical hand movements. Adding to the visual spectacle, the Summoner’s heart was used as a door from which the players entered the stage - a portal connecting the virtual world to our live event.

How We Delivered

All we fight for

The event was a real success, with more than one million viewers streaming the live experience on a variety of online platforms. This was despite the fact that the live dimension was challenging. Issues with the original hosting city of Chongqing saw our team having to relocate the tournament 1,200 km southeast to Foshan in only 10 days. Our unity and team spirit, not unlike those of the competing LPL teams, saw a quick turnaround to bring great results. The event received extensive media coverage and won four awards.
