Introduction

Rethinking digitalisation

Telekom’s DIGITAL X 2023 was a massive digitalisation event. More than 50,000 knowledge-hungry participants made their way to the streets of Cologne’s city centre for two days of pure inspiration.

Uniplan facilitated an immersive experience exploring the intersection of technology and humanity – guided by the slogan ‘Be digital. Stay human.’

The Challenge

Provide an experience of Europe's digital future in the heart of Cologne

We wanted to transform Cologne into the city of the future and position Telekom as the leading driver of digital transformation in Europe.

The conceptual implementation required careful consideration. As automation advances in many aspects of life, society grapples with uncertainty. What role will the human play in a world full of AI? This and similar questions were to be addressed in the event’s content.

Four districts, spanning two million square meters, were transformed into the venue for DIGITAL X within a short time frame – a logistical challenge not to be underestimated.

Our work involved managing over 100 locations, setting up booths and stages, ensuring a smooth accreditation process for participants, providing sustainable transportation options between districts, and even handling intricate tasks like guaranteeing interference-free frequency management for all radio devices. All of this required efficient process coordination and seamless communication with over 300 partners.

What We Did

A platform for the digital ecosystem

We set the ambitious objective of not merely organising an event but crafting a platform that embodied Telekom's innovative and forward-thinking vision.

We created event locations spanning four city districts, and six stages. There were musical acts, interactive showcases, a VIP stage, talks from household names and even a drone show.

Sourcing suitable speakers was a focus - one which we succeeded in.

At DIGITAL X, prominent figures from society, business, politics, and science discussed how digitalisation can make our world more socially just, more liveable and more sustainable. This year’s line-up included renowned speakers such as futurist Amy Webb, cyborg artist Neil Harbisson, as well as Hollywood star George Clooney.

How We Delivered

Discovering the connections between humans and technology

DIGITAL X brought the potentials of digitalisation closer to visitors. Individuals from diverse walks of life, including entrepreneurs, politicians, and experts, came together to immerse themselves in megatrends and virtual realms, as well as to engage in collaborative discussions.

If exciting innovations and technical installations were covered, the spotlight always remained on the human and social responsibility. The content was personal and relatable. Questions regarding the role of humans in an increasingly AI-driven world were not just addressed but also emotionally touched upon, sparking important debate.

Efficient coordination of processes and active communication with partners were pivotal for success. Uniplan took on the task of ensuring that every operation worked seamlessly, and that all stakeholders were united together.
